| The
2009 Cache Creek Lavender Festival will be held Sunday
June 14. Come out to the farm and enjoy a fun and relaxing
day in the country. Wander through the lavender fields
and pick your own lavender, then relax in the shade, listen
to live music and taste the excellent wines of Capay Valley
Vineyards. There will be lavender crafts demonstrations,
field tours, lavender lemonade, samples of food made with
lavender, tips on lavender cultivation and more. Lavender
plants and products made on the farm will be for sale.
A simple lunch and delicious lavender ice cream will be
available.
This
year, the festival will be preceded by an Open House
on the Farm day on Saturday June 13. Visitors will be
welcome to pick their own lavender and purchase lavender
plants and products. Admission is free for both days. The
hours are 10:00 until 4:00.
If
you visit on Saturday, stop by Capay Valley Vineyards
tasting room on the way. They will be open 12:00 to 5:00.

Wine tasting
Pam
Welch and Tom Frederick, the owners of Capay Valley Vineyards,
will once again be pouring
their current releases. Their award winning wines include
Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet and Tempranillo. The Tempranillo
recently medalled in the National Women in Wine Competition.
In addition to wine, a variety of related gifts will be
available including corkscrews and glasses.
Music
The
featured music this year will be provided by Linda Deering
and her ensemble. They will play their wonderful, eclectic
mix of jazz, blues, Celtic, and world music. Linda Deering
is a Rumsey resident who is a master of both the saxophone
and the flute and is well known in the Davis and Sacramento
music scenes.
Learn about lavender
If
you are interested in learning about lavender, there
will be plenty of opportunities.
Tours of the lavender fields with talks about growing
lavender in the garden and as a crop are scheduled throughout
the day.
Visit
the crafts tent and learn to make lavender wands, woven
with ribbon, and make a project to take home with you.
All the materials will be provided.
Handouts
with information about the history of lavender, lavender
cultivation, uses and types of lavender, as well as recipes
for cooking with lavender will be available at no charge
to Festival visitors.

Rumsey is in the beautiful Capay Valley of Yolo County.
Just traveling to Rumsey provides a lovely scenic drive
through farms, fields, vineyards, and orchards surrounded

Creek Casino Resort. There are campsites located nearby
at Cache Creek parks.

Rumsey is
very small and easily missed. It’s 12 ½ miles
beyond Cache Creek Casino, where gasoline, food and lodging
are available and about
5 miles beyond Guinda which has the Corner
Store and a small Mexican restaurant.
Rumsey has an historic
town hall and a tiny Post Office, on
the right side of SR 16. At this point,
turn left off the highway onto Manzanita Street
which is one block long. Turn right on Madrone Street.
Cache Creek Lavender is the first place
on the left.
From the Bay Area,
take I-80 east to 505 at Vacaville. Take 505 north
to SR 16. At the exit, turn left and follow
route 16 for about 25 miles to Rumsey.
From Sacramento take
I-5 north to Main Street, Woodland exit and turn left onto
Main Street, which is SR 16. Follow this road for about 35
miles to Rumsey.
From Davis take
Covell Blvd west to Road 98. Turn right onto road 98
and drive north to Woodland. At intersection of
road 98 and Main St. (Highway 16) turn left and drive
about 32 miles to Rumsey.
Parking at
the farm is somewhat limited, but there is lots of additional
parking at Rumsey Town Hall, one block away. Handicap
parking will be available at the farm.
